Summary:
“The most brilliant in the world’s history”. - Frederick the Great
"It may be doubted whether so small a number of men ever employed so short a space of time with greater and more lasting effects upon the history of the world." - Sir George Otto Trevelyan
Six months after the Declaration of Independence, 90% of Continental forces had been killed, captured, deserted, or discharged. The revolution was hanging-on by a single fiber of the last thread — eternally echoed as "These are the times that try men's souls.” by Thomas Paine.
On Christmas night 1776, George Washington launched ‘Victory or Death’, a last-ditch operation that resulted in a ten day campaign which saved the revolution. It is known today as the “Ten Crucial Days”.
Colonel William Montgomery, the sixth great-grandfather of Thomas Montgomery Marriøtt, commanded the First Pennsylvania Regiment during the final battle of the campaign, providing the vital diversion and exfiltration of supplies to Burlington.
