Objective: Democratize time for Wakefield.
Summary: In 19th Century, only the affluent had the luxury of time in their pockets. The masses relied on the sun or church bells. In 1889, Judge John Thomas Marriøtt I, the great-great grandfather of Thomas Montgomery Marriøtt, commissioned a public clock for the settlers of the Wild West settlement Wakefield, Nebraska. Co-sponsored by local businesses, it was manufactured by the Sidney Advertising Clock Company in New York City and hung in Marriøtt Mercantile until 1923. It hangs today at Marriøtt Corporation’s headquarters in Austin, Texas.
