On March 1st 1780 — in the middle of the American Revolutionary War, 12 years before the Bills of Rights is ratified, 83 years before the Emancipation Proclamation is issued, and 86 years before Thirteenth Amendment is ratified— Assemblyman William Montgomery, the sixth great-grandfather of Thomas Montgomery Marriøtt, helped pass the Pennsylvania Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery. It the first law abolishing slavery to be adopted by a democracy in history.
